How to Obtain a Nepal Visa
The simplest way to acquire a Nepal visa is upon your arrival in the country. You can do this at Tribhuwan International Airport, the main international gateway to Nepal, or at immigration entry points if you’re entering through India or Tibet.
Important Note: Citizens of certain countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Cameroon, Swaziland, Iraq, Ethiopia, Liberia, Palestine, among others, are not eligible to obtain visas at immigration entry points in Nepal. Make sure to check the current visa requirements for your nationality before planning your trip.
Requirements for Obtaining a Nepal Visa
If you’re planning to get your visa upon arrival, here’s what you’ll need:
- Valid Passport: Ensure that your passport has a validity of at least six months and has at least one blank page for the visa stamp.
- Online Application: Complete the visa application form online before your arrival. You can find the application form on the official Nepal Immigration website.
- Visa Fees: Be prepared to pay the visa fees in cash or by credit card.
Important: Your online visa application will be stored in the system for 15 days. After this period, it will be automatically deleted. Therefore, make sure to submit your visa application no more than 15 days before your planned arrival date in Nepal.
Entry Points to Nepal
Nepal offers several entry points for travelers, including:
- Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu (TIA)
- Eastern Nepal – Kakarvitta, Jhapa
- Central Nepal – Birjung, Parsa
- Northern Border – Kodari, Sindhupalchowk
- Western – Rupandehi (Belhiya, Bhairahawa)
- Mid-western – Banke (Jamuna, Nepalgunj)
- Far western – Kailali (Mohana, Dhangadhi) / Kanchanpur (Gaddachauki, Mahendranagar)
Visa Fees
The visa fees for Nepal vary based on the duration of your stay:
- USD 30 or equivalent convertible currency for 15 days.
- USD 50 or equivalent convertible currency for 30 days.
- USD 125 or equivalent convertible currency for 90 days.
- Tourists from SAARC nations can enjoy a free visa for up to 30 days.
Note: Indian nationals do not require a visa to enter Nepal, but they must present valid identification (Passport/Voter ID/Citizenship) when arriving by air. Additionally, children under ten years of age must submit a birth certificate.
Visa Extension
If you wish to extend your visa for 15 days or less, the extension fee is USD 30 or equivalent convertible currency. For extensions beyond 15 days, a daily fee of USD 2 will apply. However, the maximum extension allowed in a visa year (from January to December) is 150 days.
Transit Visa
Foreigners who find themselves at a Nepalese airport due to transit or forced landing circumstances can obtain a transit visa for one day by paying USD 5 or the equivalent in other currencies.
General Information and Guidelines
- Entering or staying in Nepal without a valid visa is illegal.
- You can obtain a tourist visa through Nepalese embassies, consulates, or other mission offices in your home country or at immigration entry points in Nepal.
- Once issued, visas cannot be amended, and visa fees are non-refundable.
- Visa fees should be paid in cash; credit cards or checks are not accepted.
- Visa fees do not apply to children under ten years of age, but they must have a valid visa.
- If you’re getting a new passport or travel document, contact the Immigration Department for document transfer.
- Always carry your passport and trekking permit while trekking in Nepal.
